What will you learn?
Meditation
Meditation is not just a practice of concentration. It is not just a form of mental exercise. It is about understanding the mind and exploring different dimensions of consciousness. Normally, our perceptions and ideas towards life and the world are influenced by our experiences, surroundings, and outer world. But when we go through the inner journey, we see we are not our experience or thought. In yoga, our true nature is defined as the state of pure consciousness. It is the state of silence that isn’t influenced by any outer experience. So, the main goal of the meditation is to realize our true selves.
According to the Patanjali yoga sutra, we can divide the stages of meditation into 3 parts, which come under the category of internal yoga, that is, Dharana, Dhyana, and Samadhi.
- Dharana: Dharana is the practice of concentration on any one particular subject without any disturbance or distraction. One can focus on their breath or energy centers. Practitioners should choose the medium where one finds it easy to focus. Dharana is the very powerful technique to improve the concentration power also. When it becomes easy to concentrate, it becomes base for the meditation.
- Dhyana: Dhyana is a practice of meditation where the mind is centered on one subject without any interruption. It is also the state of total consciousness. The concentration here becomes more effortless and natural. When one is able to meditate in such a way, it brings true peace to our mind.
At the beginning of meditation, our consciousness starts to explore on different levels of mind. The more it deepens, the more the mind becomes calm and peaceful. There is complete relaxation of mind and body in dhyana. Therefore, it is very beneficial for stress and anxiety related problems. Many mind related problems are resolved by itself with the regular practice of dhyana. The level of awareness increases. As a result, one gets the ability to look after the problems of mind in a different way. It can change the way of living and give a positive direction towards life.
3. Samadhi: Samadhi is the higher state of meditation where the meditator is able to become one with the process. In samadhi, one is connected with its true self. When there is no ego, the true self appears. In dhyana, even if the practitioner is able to go to the deeper level of meditation, still the ego doesn’t subside.
In the chapter of Samadhi Pada, the Patanjali yoga sutra talks about the vrittis of mind. The practice of Ashtanga yoga helps to understand our vrittis and overcome it. Once we are able to discipline our body and mind, dharana occurs easily. Through the regular practice of dharana, one can experience the dhyana, and when one starts to progress in dhyana, one starts to experience the inner journey.
According to our personality, we can choose meditation. There are different types of meditation. The one method where we feel easy to concentrate can be chosen. It can be chanting meditation, silence meditation, or dynamic meditation. The goal of all meditations is same, the peacefulness of mind. It’s to bring one pointedness in mind. The major meditations you are going to learn are:
- Omkar meditation
- Breathing meditation
- Mantra meditation
- Chakra meditation
- Soham meditation
- Vippassana meditation
- Kayastharam

Pranayama
Pranayama means not just the breath control, but the extension of our energy. Different kinds of breathing techniques that we practice remove the emotional and mental blockages and help to purify our body and mind.
When there are no blockages in our energy system and the mind is very clear, the energy starts to flow more fluently in our body. This prepares our body and mind for the effective meditation. As breathing exercise helps to improve concentration, meditation occurs naturally. That is why breathing exercise is not just to practice for like intake of more oxygen, but it also has great influence in the practice of meditation. That is why in hatha yoga, the practice of pranayama is regarded as very important before the practice of meditation.
By learning to slow down the mind, we learn to slow down our mind. For meditation, to keep the mind calm and peaceful is very essential. Yogic Kriyas like Bandhas, Mudras, and Shatkarma will be taught to cleanse the nadis (energy channel). It also prepares the body, nervous system, and mind to handle the Kundalini energy. Kundalini is the main serpent of energy, which is located at the base of the spine (Muladhara Chakra). Through the effective practice of breathing, meditation, and a chakra workout, Kundalini energy starts to awaken. When dormant energy wakes up towards the higher energy center, you start to feel relaxed. The higher centres of the brain and consciousness are activated, and the person is able to enjoy what he is doing. Kundalini awakening is the way to self-development and self-actualization.
